2013 Decks of the Year Finalists: Best Business Case Study

As the year draws to a close, we want to acknowledge and showcase the many amazing, inspiring decks that have been created by our community in 2013. We’ve selected ten categories, and each day beginning December 16th, we’ll reveal the five finalists in two of those categories.

1. Cat’s Print Shop, by Cat Barrett

2. The No BS Guide to PR for Startups, by Matthew Krayton

According to Matthew Krayton of Publitics, “PR is the art & science of making people pay attention,” and he combines humor and practical tips in this catchy content marketing piece. Bonus points to Matthew for using Public Notes to add detail and context to his deck and for choosing the Foundry theme–one we don’t see nearly often enough–to create such a unique look.

3. Why Coldwell Banker and the James Team? by John James

Colorado realtor and Haiku Deck Guru John James made last year’s Decks of the Year roundup with his winning listing presentation. This year he’s back with a sleek, stat-packed pitch for how the Coldwell Banker practice he runs with his wife spans global to local and offers award-winning service. We particularly love his use of stat charts and how he mixes Creative Commons photos and branded images with his own photographs for a personal touch.

 4. Bella Minds, by Shala Burroughs

Whether you’re rallying support for a cause or trying to close a big deal, every pitch benefits from bold vision, striking visuals, and a clear call to action. This case for making tech training available to women in rural areas is a standout example — and it helped Jenn Shaw and the Bella Minds team make their pilot program fundraising goal. (Bonus points for using lists so effectively, without cluttering up the beautiful slides.)

5. Walk Score for Real Estate Professionals, by Josh Herst

Anyone who’s watched Simon Sinek’s legendary TED talk knows how important it is to start with the why when explaining your product or service. Josh Herst, CEO of Walk Score, does just that in this to-the-point Haiku Deck designed to promote his service with real estate professionals. You can’t help but be inspired to walk or bike to your favorite neighborhood spots!

Presentation Boot Camp Recap

I just wrapped up a series of three webinars, Presentation Boot Camp for Power Agents, with our friends at TruliaPro. I have attended plenty of webinars and given many talks to audiences of all sizes, but presenting a webinar was an entirely new experience.

What was hardest to get used to was…the silence! I wasn’t nervous about talking to 1,000+ people, but I realized how much I depend on visual and audio cues to develop a connection with my audience, to read how things are going, and adjust. It was as disconcerting as the first time I rehearsed my Ignite talk with the slides timed to auto-advance every 15 seconds. But, just like the Ignite talk or any new presentation experience, practicing was the key. By the third session, the host and I had developed a comfortable back-and-forth dialogue to keep things moving, even though we’ve never actually met in person! (Hai-5, Jovan!)

In the first session, Three Keys to Presentations that Wow, we covered some presentation best practices that are central to Haiku Deck, but that can be applied no matter what presentation tool you’re using: in a nutshell, keep things simple, beautiful, and fun. We also touched on the #1 mistake that most presenters make (and which I’ve certainly made myself in the past), which is treating your slides like content-rich documents instead of visual aids to illustrate and enrich your message. Using the Haiku Deck Notes feature is a great way to avoid this pitfall.

How a Colorado Realtor Used Haiku Deck to Land a $1.4M Listing

In an industry as detail-oriented and spreadsheet-heavy as real estate, it might seem there’s no avoiding PowerPoint. But John James, a broker out of Steamboat Springs, has broken the mold by using Haiku Deck to present to potential clients. John’s novel approach wowed his audience, landing him a $1.4 million listing. The story, covered by Chris Smith on InmanNext, has gotten big-time buzz, and we’ve seen realtors around the globe taking note. We reached out to John to hear firsthand how he made the switch to win the pitch.

Q&A with John James

Haiku Deck: Why did you decide to try Haiku Deck for your business?

John: I was trying to do a comparative market analysis provided by my MLS site. I was getting annoyed at how much work it was and how clunky it looked. Also, the presentation didn’t feel like mine. Finally, I said “Screw it!” and pulled up Haiku Deck on my iPad. I had only briefly toyed around with it up to that point. It took me minutes to put together on Haiku Deck what I had tried to do for hours on Powerpoint.

I also have to thank Chris Smith of InmanNext and Robert Scoble of RackSpace, who both had great things to say about the app and influenced my decision to download. {See Robert Scoble’s video review of Haiku Deck here.}

Haiku Deck: And how did it turn out?

John: My biggest takeaway on Haiku Deck is how its visual impact transformed my presentation. The key for me was having a limited amount of words per slide, which helped me focus my presentation. The images the app pulled up, along with my own photos, made dry market statistics come to life. It ended up being exactly the way I wanted it to be.
