Grow Your Presentation Audience with User Profiles

Today we’re announcing new user profile pages to help you build awareness for your presentations and grow your presentation audience. Public profile pages show all of your publicly shared decks in one place so that it’s easier to share with your audience and also easier to be discovered when viewers search for your presentations. You can even customize the Haiku Deck URL that points to your user page to drive awareness for you, your company, your organization, class or brand.

Profile pages also help Haiku Deck viewers discover new presentations and learn more about authors. Now on the presentation page, viewers can click on the author’s name to see all of their publicly shared Haiku Decks!

Features of profile pages include customizable:

  • Profile and background images
  • Link to your website
  • Short Biography
  • Links to social channels like Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook

When signed in, users can access the profile editing tools under the blue “edit profile” button on the new MY DECKS page. Your audience will see a slightly different view of this page- one that hides private decks from view.

You can now access these public profile pages by clicking the names of authors below their decks on the playback page. See highlighted area in the screen grab below.

Achievement Unlocked! Using Haiku Deck to Help Land Your Next Job

We love hearing about all the different ways members of our community use Haiku Deck each day. Aside from the great feeling we get from happy users, we get invaluable feedback about ways we can improve the experience. Last week, we received this message from a new user, “I was able to create 2 fab last minute presentations and secured a new job… You are amazing!”

Our collective day being made, we had to learn more, which led to this interview with Tammy Leipacher, of Birmingham, England. Tammy works in training and education after a stint working for an organization that helped people start and grow their own businesses.

Here’s more about the story of how Tammy used Haiku Deck to land her new job.

Congrats on your new job! What is it that you do?

I work for a technical training academy, my work is focussed on engaging with employers and helping young people gain apprenticeships.

How did you use Haiku Deck when applying for your job?

I used it to create two presentations, I don’t believe in death by slides and wanted something to complement what I had to say and not be the focus. I used it to search for images that had a relevance and tied in with the message I wanted to get across. They added interest and colour to my presentation in a way that standard slides don’t. I used your templates (which are so easy to use) to highlight the key points that I wanted to make.

In what ways did Haiku Deck make a difference for you?

It was the simplicity of putting the slides together and being able to find relevant but fun and quirky images to get my message across.   I was also able to take a photo of some of my own artwork, admittedly a stick drawing of myself and use that. I have used other presentation software before and there is always a worry that something will go wrong and that was the last thing I wanted in an interview. With Haiku Deck I simply produced it on my ipad and it was there ready. I had really good feedback about both presentations and I know that my confidence in my presentation made a huge difference

How do you use presentations in your new role?

I have to present to senior teams and at events throughout the region. Haiku Deck will certainly be a part of future presentations

What do you do to keep your presentations engaging/interesting/memorable?

For me it’s about putting your own personality into your presentations and making sure what you have to say is relevant. If appropriate, a little humour can also go a long way. If they can remember you, chances are they will remember what you had to say.

What advice do you have for people for who are starting to hunt for jobs of their own?

Be confident in your abilities and know what your skills are. My biggest piece of advice though is to look for something you’re going to enjoy doing. It’s so much easier to sell yourself at interview if it’s something you are passionate about. Oh and for presentations use Haiku Deck.

Good or bad, we always appreciate the opportunity to meet our users and find out about their lives. Drop us an email and tell us your story!

Presentation Templates are here with Haiku Deck v. 3.5!

We’re so proud of the team here at Haiku Deck today, as we push the button on Haiku Deck 3.5 for iPad. Here’s what’s new and awesome:

  1. Vastly improved image search: With this latest release, we’ve got our best and brightest image matching technology ever. Over the past few years, Haiku Deck users have matched tens of millions of images with their ideas. We’ve always used the choices of users to inform the results for future users, but this new release is faster, more accurate, and more intelligent than ever before. You should notice the difference right away.
  2. Template Gallery and Copy Templates comes to iPad: It’s always been our vision to make it 10 times faster and easier to create decks that are 10 times more compelling. One way we’re delivering on this is by making public and reusable content from our community available to everyone. After seeing the tremendous popularity of the copy decks feature and template gallery on Haiku Deck for Web, we’re finally bringing similar functionality to iPad. This lets users find templates that suit their needs. In iPad, just click the GALLERY button and then look for Template Gallery along the top. Once you find a template that suits you, just click Copy and you’re already half way home! Some examples of what you’ll find there include:
    • Idea Sharing
    • Professional Profile
    • How-To
    • Press Release
    • Social Media Report
    • Webinar
    • Status Update
    • Event Recap

  1. Drag and Drop List Items: One of our most requested features is now available on iPad. To reorder your list items just tap on the number or bullet and drag it up or down in the list. You’re going to love it!

As always, we love to hear your feedback! Drop us a line, send us a tweet, or better yet, tweet us a Haiku Deck to tell us what you think! If you love the latest version of Haiku Deck, we’d appreciate a quick review on iTunes!

Using Sidebar Slides & Wrapping List Items in Haiku Deck

If you’re anything like us, updates to Haiku Deck are like fun new toys: when you find out about them, you want to drop everything immediately and try them out. So I’ll cut to the chase:

Great News: We've added new features to Haiku Deck!

Now, you can divide your slide with a solid colored bar that makes your words stand out.

Different configurations in the layout tool allow you to choose how to split it up.

Bullet text wraps now to make more space for anything you need to type in your lists.

Pretty cool, right?

Wait a second — you’re still here? You’d rather read more of this blog post before you take the new features for a spin? Oooookay…

Details about the New Features

Sidebar Slides:

To use this awesome new slide type, just head to the Tt tool on the left in edit mode, and choose the option highlighted below:

sidebar

Type your text and add a photo like you normally would, and use the solid colors tab in the background tool (photograph icon on the left) to choose the color in the bar behind your text. Use the layout tool (green grid-like icon on the left, below Tt) to rearrange your text and image, and choose how the two are divided on the slide.

For more info, check out our tutorials and videos about:

Wrapping List Items:

To have your list items wrap, just type them the way you normally would have. This update replaced the list slides of the past, so all you need to do is go to the Tt tool on the left and choose one of the list options (bulleted or numbered). Type away! For more info about choosing a list slide type, check out our support article here.

We hope you’re as excited as we are about the new updates — now give them a try, and let us know what you think in the comments below!

Working With Templates

Editing

For each template, we’ve blocked out suggested slides to give your Haiku Deck structure, but we’ve also made it really easy to add, copy, delete, or rearrange your slides. We’ve also made sure that changing the layouts and formatting your slides will remain simple.

And if you’re more of a visual learner, we’ve created a helpful video that teaches you how to arrange your text, change the font and text color, and more, here.

Selecting a Theme

We’ve selected a theme to match the mood of that specific deck, but you can choose any theme you’d like to use. Learn more about selecting themes here.

If you’d like to see a preview, and samples, of all 20 themes, check out A Field Guide to Haiku Deck’s Free Themes.

Using Images

You are free to use the images that we’ve selected, but of course you can also search for other free Creative Commons images or import your own images.

If the deck uses a logo slide, you’ll want to add your own logo to the cover slide, and use your own brand colors. You can learn more about these two features here.

Finishing Touches

Once you’ve finished editing and the deck, you’re probably going to want to share your deck. We recommend doing this straight from Edit Mode so that you can put these finishing touches to your deck:

  • Retitle the deck to reflect your changes.
  • These decks will be PUBLIC by default. If you do not wish for your deck to be public, make sure you update your privacy settings.
  • Update the deck’s description. You can do this by clicking on the Settings gear at the top right corner in the editor (in the web app), or by tapping the Share button (on the iPad app).
  • Select a category for your deck.
  • Choose whether or not you would like others to be able to copy your deck, just like you did with the template. Learn more about that here.

You might remember from last time that packing slides full of text is a no-go. Guess what? This applies to data, too. Thankfully, Haiku Deck makes showing the story behind your numbers way easier than those pesky word problems in math class.

Here are some quick pointers for presenting data effectively, plus a fun two-minute challenge:

Hints: Head to the photography image icon on the left to choose a background for your slide, and then select the chart tab. Pick which chart you’d like to use, give your chart a title (or, even better, an attention-grabbing headline), and simply enter your data points. (That’s right — no spreadsheets or funky business!)

Presentation Inspiration 2: One Idea Per Slide

Ever suffered through a presentation packed with tiny text, read aloud word by word? Experts agree: content narrowed down to one idea per slide is way better for an audience’s comprehension (and sanity). While this can be a challenging exercise for some, Haiku Deck makes it easy.

Here are some quick pointers on simplifying communication — and a fun two-minute challenge:
