Creative Ways Coaches Use Haiku Deck Presentations

While conference rooms, classrooms, and auditoriums might have been the original setting for slide decks, those are in no way the limits of their utility. Coaches especially have found a myriad of ways to use slide decks — from “About Me” pages, to instruction manuals, to blog title graphics. These uses of slide decks save time, provide personal connection with potential clients, and create consistent branding. Let’s take a look at some of the creative uses coaches have found for Haiku Deck!

About Me Pages

Cena Block has a very personal connection to her coaching niche. After becoming a mom, she realized how hard it was to run a business within a family-centered life. Furthermore, she discovered other moms struggling with similar issues. She switched to coaching, sharing what she wishes she had known when she was starting her business. Through her coaching practice, she helps moms learn how to balance a startup and a family without burning out on either.

To introduce people to her practice, Cena has an amazing slide deck that runs through her full story from a steady, career-focused life, through becoming a mom, starting her own business, and eventually becoming a coach. Her deck beautifully combines personal imagery with a narrative structure that gives her audience something to deeply relate to. She finishes off the deck with a small promotion of her practice, after highlighting how her experience and the lessons she learned could help her audience.

Intro to a Concept

Cassandra O’Neill has written multiple books on the idea of Collective Leadership. This entails going above and beyond teamwork and learning to work as a system. By shifting leadership from something you do for people to something you do with people, collective leadership allows everyone to contribute to their fullest ability.

Cassandra has an incredible deck to explain the idea of Collective Leadership that she points to from multiple pages of her website. Similar to the “About Me” deck, this deck introduces an idea and finishes off with contact info and links to follow for more information. It smoothly introduces the core principles of Collective Leadership and gives the audience a clear idea of what they could learn from Cassandra.

How-to Guides

Elise Enriquez has an exemplary deck for how-tos. Her presentation,  “Ideas Into Action” leads its audience through the days just after a large conference, teaching them how to synthesize the wealth of information learned from attending. The deck itself has a great balance of information and visuals, but the key piece of this deck are her slide notes. Each slide is accompanied by 100-150 words of notes that guide the reader through the step outlined on the slide.

By using a slide deck format, Elise gets the best of both worlds; it is detailed enough to provide all of the information you need in the notes, but simple enough on the slides to make it very easy to review. The slides are concise, the slide notes are detailed, and overall, it gives the reader a choice between a quick overview with just the slides, or an in-depth read through the notes.

Blog Post Title Graphics

One of the most interesting uses for Haiku Deck comes from Coach Cheryl Leitschuh, who uses Haiku Deck as a blog graphics generator. Cheryl has taken advantage of the easy to read, at-a-glance design of Haiku Deck to create powerful title graphics for blogs and newsletters. Many people (including myself) have struggled with blogging tools trying to create nice visuals. Cheryl can do the entire visual creation side with Haiku Deck and just pass those on to her blogging software.

Background Information

Cena Block is back again with another innovative use of slide decks. If you have taken a personality test (or BuzzFeed-style quiz) online, you’ll know that at the end,you get an indigestible wall of text detailing your personalized results. Cena realized that this format, while personalized, didn’t feel very personal. For her TSSI (Time and Space Style Inventory) Personality Style Assessment, she used a Haiku Deck complete with imagery that clearly illustrates the insights and strategies for managing your space and time.

In addition to feeling more personal, the Haiku Deck with slide notes adds the in-depth/quick-overview option just like Elise’s “Ideas Into Action” deck above. To read all the slide notes for the example deck below, click here.

Webinars

A webinar is a great tool for coaches looking to expand their practice. Webinars let you reach more people, faster, and build relationships with each of them just as you would in a workshop or conference. We have a lot more info about webinars in these posts.

Jared Ganem’s powerful webinar “Double Your Bookings” makes use of recorded audio over his slides to give him an even more personal connection to his audience. In addition, his beautiful imagery and professional formatting lend him an immediate air of authority, pulling his audience even closer.

We are pleased to announce a new feature for Haiku Deck Premium subscribers, Presentation Analytics. If you’re using presentations to raise money or sell or conduct marketing, this is a great new way to see how your presentation content is being consumed by viewers and to get notified when key people engage with your Haiku Decks.

Invitations: Allows you to create a custom link to send to anyone in order to get in-depth analytics based on their actions related to your Haiku Deck. Presentation Analytics will track when the invitation is clicked, how long the viewer spent looking at the deck, and trigger an email notification to you when the link is clicked.

Recent Viewers: Provides high-level data on recent viewers of your individual decks or all of your decks in aggregate. This includes time spent on the deck(s), the location of the viewer, the date and time of their visit.

Views: Provides a line chart showing the number of views received for the deck and time frame you select.

Downloads: Shows a line chart of all of the downloads that you deck has received over the selected time period.

Shares: Show the number of shares of your deck to different social media platforms via the share buttons on the playback page. Specifically, you will see the number of shares of your deck to Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Google Plus, Google Classroom, as well as the number of time a link to your deck has been copied.

Though Presentation Analytics will apply to all of your Haiku Decks, data for this feature is only available beginning from the start of Presentation Analytics tracking on September 15, 2017. Learn more about Presentation Analytics in the Haiku Deck user guide.

As with any new feature, we’re eager to hear your feedback! Click here to learn more about Haiku Deck Premium and to upgrade. Also, if you’re a qualifying nonprofit, be sure to take advantage of our 50% off pricing. Drop us a line at team@haikudeck.com and let us know what you think!

New! Live Presentations for Webinars, Remote Sales, and More

If you’re looking to offer live presentations for webinars, remote sales calls, or online classes, Haiku Deck’s new Live Presentation Mode is for you! This allows you to share your presentation playback from a browser to remote viewers no matter where they are or what connected device they’re using.  As the presenter navigates through slides on their web browser, the audience members will see the slides change on their screens, whether they’re across the room or across the world.

To use Live Mode, first sign into a Haiku Deck Premium account. If you’re a qualifying public-sector educator, you can get Live Mode through the Haiku Deck Classroom subscription level.

Next, visit the playback page for your presentation and look for the green GO LIVE button next to your slides.

When you click the Go Live button, you’ll see a special Live presentation URL. This is the link your audience members will need in order to join your presentation. Just copy it and share it in your meeting request, through email, or chat.

When this link is  clicked, viewers will be prompted to enter their name before they join the presentation.

The animation above shows three different browser windows. The audience-member experience is shown in the windows on the left in separate Firefox and Chrome browsers. The right side is the presenter’s view. As the presenter clicks to advance the slides, the audience stays in sync. Here’s a short video demonstration of the feature in action:

This feature has been tested on up to 150 simultaneous connected devices. 1:1 Classroom teachers who are familiar with products like Nearpod can use live mode in a similar fashion, driving a presentation from their device for students who are viewing from their own devices.

This works as well for desktop viewers as it does on mobile devices. It doesn’t matter if you’re presenting to someone across the board room on a browser or across the world on a connected iOS or Android device. The audience will see what you want them to see when you want them to see it. Questions? Learn more in our user guide.

Using Haiku Deck for Professional Development Presentations

Professional Development Presentations for Educators

Tens of thousands of educators use Haiku Deck for professional development presentations, training, and other events. This section includes a few great examples of work we’ve seen from members of our community as well as a couple of time-saving templates for promoting and recapping EdCamp events.

Haiku Deck Guru Simon McKenzie created this first example. As Simon explains: This deck, along with the Ken Robinson speech, will be a PD Presentation to a group of 70+ high school teachers. The aim will be to ‘provoke’ teachers to adopt a new approach to technology integration.” This presentation has speaker notes accompanying many of the slides. To see these notes, view the presentation at the Haiku Deck site via this link: The New Mind Set.

This second example was created by Mindi Vandagriff, and has over 1000 views on the Haiku Deck. Mindi used Haiku Deck to visually represent her take-ways from the International Society of Technology in Education conference 2013. To see the presentation at the site, use this link: My ISTE 13 Gems

Another great example of use for professional development can be seen in Fiona Harvey’s “Developing Digital Skills” presentation which was presented at the Maghreb Digital Learning & Education Innovation conference. In this presentation, Harvey discusses using students as partners to develop digital skills.

Educator Judy Arzt has used Haiku Deck to enliven her blog, sharing a Haiku Deck that she used for a discussion her Computers in the Classroom course at University of Saint Joseph in West Hartford, Connecticut. She wrote, “This embedded Deck illustrates how a ‘found’ Haiku Deck can be used for online or even in-class discussions on a topic related to the curriculum of the course.  I came across this presentation archived in Haiku Deck, and thought many of the points spoke to how the ideas of theorists translate into using technology in the classroom to create a learner-centered environment. You might recognize the names of such theorists as Alan November and Sr. Kenneth Robinson, who have long promoted that we turn the classroom into a learner-centered, social constructivist setting.”
