Haiku Deck Supports Hurricane Sandy Relief Efforts

Outside of Dogfish Head Beer and Joe Biden, my sweet little home state of Delaware doesn’t make the news all that frequently. Yesterday, of course, was a different story, and I had a hard time tearing myself away from the photos of familiar spots in Rehoboth Beach–perhaps my favorite place on the planet–being battered by waves and flooded by  seawater and sand. Being thousands of miles away, watching and waiting to hear from friends and family, makes you feel, well, helpless.

But there are ways to help, and Kevin thought of a cool one—he proposed that we donate the net proceeds from this week’s in-app purchases to the Red Cross to support disaster relief efforts. So if you’ve been thinking about picking up a few new themes, this week those dollars will go to a very good cause that’s close to our hearts.

We also thought Haiku Deck would be a great way to spread the word about quick things you can do to help those affected by the monster storm. We’re working on all of them.

Please help our tiny company make a big impact by spreading the word and sharing this Haiku Deck far and wide. And to all our East Coast friends, we’re thinking about you.

Are You a Haiku Deck Guru?

We’ve seen some amazing advocacy and evangelism around Haiku Deck, with fans sending us haikus, blogging about the app, innovating with it, using it to give presentations at conferences, and spreading the word through Twitter chats and events. We decided to make it official by inviting select superusers to become Haiku Deck Gurus.

Meet the Haiku Deck Gurus

We currently have about 25 gurus, representing seven countries and three continents, and they are an amazing, inspiring, diverse bunch!

Haiku Deck Gurus: Areas of Expertise

Decks by our Gurus appear frequently in our Featured and Popular Galleries–Visual Storytelling by photographer and educator Ken Shelton, for example, has been enjoyed by more than 11,000 viewers. School counselor Susan Spellman Cann is one of our most prolific creators, bringing her uplifting messages to deck after beautiful deck. Blogger Wendy Townley created a series of gorgeous Haiku Decks to recap her experience at the Alt Design Summit. Simon McKenzie’s manifesto, the New Mindset, has struck a chord with educators worldwide and is one of the most frequently shared Haiku Decks. Creative marketer Nick Armstrong offers up his own Haiku Deck manifesto, WTF Marketing, on his site.

To date we’ve featured guest Q&As with education Guru Jeremy Macdonald, blogger and entrepreneur Megan Hunt, and realtor John James on our blog. You can also follow our Gurus on Twitter, see more examples of their work on Pinterest, and hang out with them on Google+, where new Guru and new media expert Mark Traphagen is helping us build awareness.

We always love hearing what you have to say about Haiku Deck, whether it’s in the form of a Fast Company story, a blog post, a video, a tweet, or a haiku. Here are a couple of reviews that were actually created with Haiku Deck. Yes, it’s a little meta, but let’s just roll with it.

Startup Storytelling for the Win

A few weeks ago, Adam kicked off the Geekwire Seattle Startup Day event with a talk on why storytelling is so essential for entrepreneurs. In his presentation he covers all of the essentials for startups wishing to make their story more compelling. Why is storytelling important? How do you craft your story? What are the critical elements of a great startup story? Learn more in the video below:

Here’s the Haiku Deck he created for the talk (nice use of the “Starship” theme, Captain Tratt):

At last count more than 7 million folks had watched the Simon Sinek “Start With Why” TED talk referenced by Adam, but it’s always worth watching again.

Here at HDHQ, we’re working on both our dream AND our plan. And if you’d like to know more about our “why,” we invite you to read this.

What’s your “why”? We’d love to hear about it in the comments.

Walt Mossberg on Haiku Deck

You know what’s awesome? When the great Walt Mossberg praises you in public. You know what’s less awesome? When you’re not there to hear it.

Thanks to Twitter and Storify, we could put the pieces together, more or less.

Walt, thank you–for the compliment and for your inspiring vision about the post-PC world.

Love Notes (with Three Bonus Fan Haikus)

Our official sources tell us it’s love note day. Of course you already know how we feel about you, but it seems like the perfect opportunity to share some of the warm and fuzzy Haiku Deck love that’s been pouring in. Behold, three exquisite fan haikus about Haiku Deck, that we’ve taken the liberty of making into exquisitely illustrated Haiku Decks. Wait, what? We need more coffee…

A Love Letter to Our Fans

It turns out Love Note Day is sometime next week (who decides these things, anyway?) but we just can’t wait that long. We need to shower our fans with some love right now.

Last Friday afternoon, we released a new version of Haiku Deck, and poof! All the glowing comments and 4&5-star reviews pretty much vanished into thin air. Suddenly, all we had showing was a couple of spammy reviews claiming that Haiku Deck was a complete waste of $$ (umm, it’s free). Meanwhile, this awesome write-up of Haiku Deck in Fast Company Design was sending tons of people to iTunes to check us out, and it just didn’t look good.

We put the word out, and wow, did our community deliver. Fans–even very new fans–took the time to click through to iTunes and add their comments. We got our 4-star average back in a matter of hours. On the weekend!

To each of you who helped us out, thank you. And really, to every single one of our fans, thank you for being so crazy amazing, every single day. Thank you for tweeting to us, writing to us, writing about us, telling your friends about us, and sharing your ideas. Thank you for every single Haiku Deck you have published. We are doing our best to keep up with it all, but just in case we missed you, thank you. This one’s for you:

Ignite Seattle 17

We’re proud to showcase Haiku Deck tonight at Ignite Seattle 17. Ignite was started in Seattle in 2006 by Brady Forrest of O’Reilly Radar and Bre Pettis of Make. Since then Ignite events have sprung up the world-over. Each Ignite speaker gets 20 slides, 15 seconds per slide. Yikes! Our talk is entitled “Bullet Control Now,” a homage to Chris Rock’s argument that if bullets cost $5000 each, people would think twice about killing one another. We couldn’t agree more and we think the idea ought to be extended to bullet points too. We hope you enjoy the deck and we’ll post a link to the video as soon as it’s available. Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Haiku Deck is Live in iTunes, Worldwide!

After tons of hard work and more than a little hand wringing, we finally submitted our release build of Haiku Deck to Apple for approval. Apple has a relatively stringent quality control process, so we were more than thrilled to receive notice that our app has been approved for worldwide distribution via iTunes. Here’s the Haiku Deck that Kevin wrote to show our appreciation for Apple’s app approval team.
